Family Festival

Free Family Fun Sunday, December 2, 2018 | noon-5 p.m.

The Family Festival offers the community an opportunity to experience many of Omaha’s leading downtown attractions for free. This year’s Family Festival will be held Sunday, December 2, from noon to 5 p.m. A free trolley service will connect the participating venues described below. Each site will offer free admission and family activities. In addition, select Omaha musicians will perform at The Durham Museum, W. Dale Clark Public Library and Joslyn Art Museum.

  Ollie the Trolley will provide free trolley rides between locations.

Omaha Children’s Museum, 500 South 20th Street

  • Engage in active play in the museum’s exhibits
  • Visit Santa and his elves in the festively-decorated Santa’s Magic exhibit
  • Enjoy the free Freezing Cold Science Shows in the Science Theatre
  • Take a carousel or train ride for $2 each

Omaha Police Mounted Patrol Barn, 615 Leavenworth Street

  • Tour the stables and visit with Santa
  • Meet and greet with the officers and horses. Learn how police officers care for the animals at the Mounted Patrol Barn and get your picture taken with the horses; officers will present horse demonstrations as guests warm up with Swiss Miss hot cocoa
  • Saddle up with LaRue’s Little Horse Ranch Pony Rides
  • Xenon Academy will offer face painting and families can enjoy balloon art from Amazing Author Entertainment

The Durham Museum, 801 South 10th Street

  • Experience the wonder of the season at The Durham Museum during Christmas at Union Station
  • See Omaha’s largest indoor Christmas tree, visit with Santa and enjoy family-friendly holiday activities, including live musical performances
  • Visit the Holiday Cultural Trees exhibit, an annual favorite which highlights the holiday traditions of approximately a dozen cultures in the Omaha community
  • View the wonderful temporary exhibitions on display including Thomas D. Mangelsen: A Life in the Wild AND Fighting for the Good Life: Nebraskan Memories of World War I

W. Dale Clark Library, 215 South 15th Street

  • Meet and get your photo taken with Elephant & Piggie and OPL’s mascot Scamper
  • Take home your very own children’s book for FREE — while supplies last
  • Family members of all ages can hear live holiday music, color and listen to storytimes by OPL librarians

Joslyn Art Museum, 2200 Dodge Street

  • Explore Joslyn Art Museum’s galleries including the exhibitions Pattern and Purpose: American Quilts from Shelburne Museum and Some Illustrator! Pictures by Melissa Sweet, Sibert medalist and Caldecott Honor winner. Visit the “pop up” exhibition of quilts from the International Quilt Study Center & Museum (Lincoln, NE), featuring traditional American designs dating to the mid-19th century. Pattern and Purpose is a ticketed exhibition: free for children and a special $5 discounted admission for adults during the Family Festival only.
  • Swing by ART WORKS: A Place for Curiosity, offering nine creative project stations for all ages, all with connections to works of art found in Joslyn’s permanent collection. Don’t forget to visit the studios to experiment with hands-on activities and create your own works of art!
  • Art-making: Join the Joslyn Museum in creating the largest cardboard quilt-fort the Museum has ever seen! Help piece together small cardboard diamond shapes to create a huge quiltstallation in Joslyn’s Community Gallery Space. Stop by and create your own “quilt block” to share in their community project. Continue your art-making to help create a multi-layered image inspired by the quilt block designs!

Downtown YMCA, 430 S. 20th Street

  • Interactive Activity Tour with stops for: Health/Holiday Themed Crafts, Bounce Houses, Dancing and tumbling, simple fitness training for adults and kids AND hot chocolate/coffee and cookies with Santa
